Wielding the Sword of SQL and the epic Libram of XSL Transformations, we excavate the treasures to be found in the World Of Warcraft Armoury.
All reports are now hosted at my Google App Engine site. Over there you’ll find a menu system that will take you to the data pages that you are looking for.
Could you explain ‘ popularity’ ?
The higher it is the better the item is or is it because most mage’s go for that item?
Apologies, but your comment got swallowed up by the spam filter. ‘Popularity’ just means most mages goferit, and says nothing in itself about quality. We work on the assumption that the most popular choices are sensible ones. But you need to jump over to database sites like Wowhead to see which pieces of gear are right for you.
this is a sweet article
i acually compare the most popular results and decided which one i like the most and book marked them all ><
Popular choices will be good to follow if you aren’t in a top end raiding guild. Most people are “casuals”, so those gear choices represent what gear most casuals can get their hands on.
This is all gear I was wearing 5 months ago, so if you go by this stuff, it’s a good starting point, but it’s definitely not a great target point for where you want to be.
Oh that’s basically right. I’m looking at ways of refining the sample to find the better raiders and PvPers but there are some limitations due to the length of time it takes to scan through the armoury.
What this data set would identify is the best of the most commonly available gear. I.e. for now it would basically identify best in slot gear for Naxx-25/Heroics/Crafteds.
The only real way to datamine actual best in slot gear (obviously tools like rawr already do this mathematically – given a set of assumptions) would be to filter by achievements. I.e. only include data from players with a decided level of ulduar-25 achievements, such as glory of the raider, or something similar.
However, that list would be highly impractical, as 95% of all mages will not see that level of gear until Tier 9 is released and their guilds are finally starting to crack tier 8. So then it will have value, but for now, this list probably has the greatest value to the average mage.
Sure, theorycrafting approaches the problem from another angle. Sites like this are really just part of the “big picture”. I am thinking hard about achievements and also about the toon stats that can be obtained from the armoury. Both of these inputs can be used to sort characters by performance: my twink reports are based on a couple of the PvP stats pages, for example. Sigh… so many possibilities and so little time, but.
